Opener in Gdynia Guide: How to organise your trip. Tips from a local
Are you planning to come for Opener Festival in Gdynia, Poland? That’s great! You will not regret it. There is no better place for a summer festival.
As you will have fun at the festival itself and enjoy the city and your time during the day too. In 2026, the Opener Festival will take place 1-4.07.2026. The line-up is partially announced already and in my opinion it looks great, also for millennials and older participants.
I’m a Gdynia local who used to go to the festival as well. Let me tell you how to organise your trip to Gdynia during Opener. A few tips may sound a little bit funny (or less typical, to say it in nicer words), but believe me, I know what I’m saying.
Gdynia during Opener
Gdynia is a part of Polish Tricity. It’s a city with around 250 000 inhabitants. During the summer, however, it becomes very crowded. It’s a popular seaside destination for many Polish and foreign tourists or a one-day trip destination for tourists staying in Sopot or Gdańsk.
However, there is one ‘prime-time’ for crowds and it’s during the Opener festival time. Nothing strange about this, as it’s over 100,000 guests that visit the festival during 4 days. Part of them are obviously local, but many are guests from other cities and countries. It’s very palpable in Gdynia centre and beach, restaurants, stations, trains and roads. Be prepared for this as well, although for festival participants it only adds to the festival vibe.
Traffic and bus to festival
The festival takes place in the Babie Doły neighbourhood, at the airport. It’s further from the centre.
You will get there easily with free festival buses that start at Gdynia train station (Gdynia Główna); just remember it takes time. There will be many buses and cars going this direction, in addition to just ‘normal’ city traffic, so you can get stuck in a traffic jam.
So if you care about any concert that takes place earlier, calculate the time and leave earlier.
Free buses bring you back to the same place also during the night, after concerts. It’s usually less crowded then.
Bus stop
If you stay in Gdynia centre, you will get to the festival bus easily on foot. It’s just next to the main station, around 25 minutes’ walk from the city beach.
If you stay in Gdańsk or Sopot, you will come to Gdynia Główna with SKM (quick Tricity trains) and change there to the festival bus. Also very easy and convenient. There will be many trains going, but it might be crowded as well.
Crowds in restaurants
Between late morning and early evening, Opener participants enjoy the city. Including restaurants and cafes, which are many and interesting in Gdynia. Restaurants are prepared for this, but there might be lines anyway. Take it into consideration and calculate more time for eating, etc.
Sometimes places have special discounts for festival participants; keep your eyes open for that.
If you want to eat some good breakfast or brunch, check out this blog post; you will find there the best places for this.
Accommodation
Accommodation during Opener is a tough topic. There are many places in Gdynia or the whole Tricity, but the demand is really high during that time, and prices just go up very much.
So the first rule is to book it as soon as possible. You may have a bigger choice and better prices if you book it earlier.
The second rule is to be careful and book places only from legit sources. Here, you can read more about accommodation options in Gdynia.
In my opinion it’s best to stay in Gdynia centre: Śródmieście or Działki Leśne. Somewhere within walking distance of the main station.
But if you stay even further or in Sopot or Gdańsk, there will be trains during the night. It will just take you longer to get home.
There is obviously camping and tent places next to the festival location, so you can organise your accommodation there. Then you probably enjoy more the festival vibes and not so much the city itself.

Tips from a local
What else should you know when visiting Gdynia during Opener?
Eat jagodzianka
Opener time is the best time when it comes to food. There are a lot of seasonal fruits and vegetables; you can eat many seasonal dishes. Or in restaurants, but you can also go to the market or vegetables’ shops (there are many in Gdynia) and prepare it at your rented place.
One of these seasonal food offers is a pastry full of blueberries. The season for it starts exactly during Opener time, so don’t hesitate and stand in line (rather in the mornings) to get it. The best ones you can buy in small bakeries like Loav, Pokusa, Kruche or Must Bake.
Wristbands
You need to exchange your ticket for the wristband. There are a few points to do. You can do it even before the gates to the festival. I think the biggest lines are usually at the main station (dworzec główny), from where buses go.
However, there is also one more place, and I think it’s usually with the smallest lines. It’s in Park Rady Europy in Gdynia, very close to the seaside. If you have more time, I recommend doing it there during your walk.
Weather
Weather at the Polish seaside is one of my favourite topics. The problem is that you never know what the weather will be here. It can be super-hot but can be chilly and not that summery too. It changes very often. So you need to be well-prepared for all the options.
Remember to take with you a light jacket, as it can be very windy here.
And even if the day is very hot, you may need some light long sleeves for the evening and night.
Another thing is that during Opener time for years already, ‘always something’ happens with the weather. It’s obviously not the rule, but my observations for years.
It can be a heatwave and then huge storms or just a cold wave and rains, so it would be good if you prepared suncream and a raincoat, too. During Opener 2022 there was such a strong storm that participants had to get evacuated, and the concert of Dua Lipa was cancelled.
Obviously such a tough situation doesn’t happen often. Anyway, just bear in mind the changeable weather conditions in Gdynia when you are packing.
Tickets
Opener Festival is quite expensive. But the earlier you buy the ticket, the better. If you are sure you want to come to the festival, buy early bird tickets, and as I said in the accommodation section, try to organise it in advance.
If you are flying, then try to find a connection to Gdańsk Airport. It’s very easy to get to Gdynia from there.
For other general info, you can see the festival website.
Opener is the biggest and the most well-known Polish festival, and I’m lucky or not lucky at all (depends how you look at it) to have it organised in my city.
